Friday Night Hoops: Panther girls get first win; Cards on top

The Nashua High School South girls basketball team found a great way to warm up for today’s rivalry game vs. Nashua North.

That’s by tasting victory for the first time in 11 months.

The Panthers, who were on a near month-long pandemic pause and just opened their season this past Wednesday, edged Pelham on Friday night.

In a busy night of high school hoop, they joined several other local hoop teams in the winner’s circle, including the North and South boys teams plus both Bisthop Guertin squads.

Here’s the Friday night rundown:

GIRLS BASKETBALL

NASHUA SOUTH 41,

PELHAM 40

Iruka Obinelo (eight points) secured a Panther win, with an offensive rebound off of a missed free throw with seven seconds left to get by the Pythons. Morgan Gillis had team high 11 points and Maya Rioux added 10.

South (1-1) visits Nashua North today at 1 p.m.

BISHOP GUERTIN 68,

SALEM 33

The Cardinals (9-0) continue their dominant season with a road against the Blue Devils. Catelyn Wheeler had a team high 14 points, Meghan Stack scored 13 and Brooke Paquette had 12. BG visits Merrimack on Monday.

WINDHAM 58,

ALVIRNE 42

The Broncos, who had played several consecutive close games, dropped to 4-4 with their second straight loss the the Jaguars, this one on the road.

Freshman Rachel Allard led the Broncos with 16 while Jaime O’Connor added 12.

Alvirne will host Londonderry on Tuesday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 67,

MILFORD 34

The Cavaliers took the lead and ran away from the Spartans. Elisabeth Stapelfeld led the team with 14 points, Bella Ferrazzani had 12 points, Cheyenne Colbert had nine points and eight rebounds and McKenna Dunn added eight points.

Milford’s Bailey Johnson led all scorers with 16. HB visits ConVal and Milford visits Souhegan on February 19.

BOYS BASKETBALL

NASHUA NORTH 74,

MERRIMACK 49

The Titans (7-1) won their sixth straight game, while the Tomahawks fall for the eighth time in a row. Sam McElliott had a great showing tallying 20 points, Curtis Harris-Lopez had 10, Trevor Labrecque had nine and Jayden Montgomery added eight.

Merrimack’s Kebe Pimentel and Jack Tarleton had 13 and 11 points respectively. North hosts Timberlane on Tuesday and Merrimack visits Bishop Guertin on Monday.

NASHUA SOUTH 46,

TIMBERLANE 41

The Panthers (4-3) move above the .500 mark with a close at home against the Owls. Cody Rocheleau had a great offensive performance with 17 points, Alex Hulfachor scored nine and Jaden Murphy had eight.

The two teams meet again on Monday in Plaistow.

BISHOP GUERTIN 78,

SALEM 32

Dylan Santosuosso put up 17 points in the 8-4 Cardinals dominant win over a shorthanded Blue Devils team. Ryan Stack tallied nine points with Nate Kane contributing eight.

BG hosts Merrimack on Monday.

ALVIRNE 69,

WINDHAM 60

The Broncos (6-3) got redemption over the Jaguars after a tough loss on Wednesday. Brendan Graham (18 points), Nick Jacques (17 points) and Jacob Hibbard (14 points) led a collective team effort.

Alvirne visits Londonderry on Tuesday.
