Hollis Brookline’s Justin Colby knew the conditions weren’t great, and he didn’t let his seventh place finish in the Division II boys alpine ski championships Giant Slalom at Cranmore bother him.

“Even though he finished seventh overall in the GS portion of the race, he knew he could push himself further in the Slalom portion during the afternoon,” HB coach Matt LoPresti said.

And Colby was right, as he is now the Division II Slalom state champion, winning the race in 1:08.74, just ahead of Hanover’s Dylan Hendrick (1:09.05).

As a result, the Cavaliers finished second in the Slalom and fourth overall (697 points) in the meet won by Hanover (755.5) with Kennett second (736) and last year’s champion Bow third (705.5).

Souhegan finished seventh overall at 589.

Meanwhile, in Division I at Gunstock, Bishop Guertin’s three-year reign came to an end as the Cardinals finished third overall – despite winning the Giant Slalom – behind champion Bedford (691) and Keene (657). Bedford won its first title since 2017, right before the Cards begin their threepeat.

Merrimack finished 11th with 520 points while Nashua South was 14th (426) and Nashua North 16th (327).

Here’s a look at Thursday’s boys results and Wednesday’s girls state meets as well:

DIVISION II BOYS

HB’s Braeden O’Connor was 12th in the Slalom in 1:16.90, while teammate Max Marshall was 16th (1:21.56) and Martin Bergeron 19th (1:25.16).

Souhegan was eighth in the Slalom, led by Nate Fritz (22nd, 1:26.76) and Will Upton (33,1:37.48).

In the GS, Colby was seventh in 49.84 seconds, while HB’s Ben Palmer (21, 51.17),, Max Marshall (51.59, 24th), Braeden O’Connor (25, 52.07) and Martin Bergeron (27, 52.65) helped the Cavs to a fourth spot.

“Justin has been skiing at a high level all season long and all his hard work throughout the season paid off today,” LoPresti said. “The course conditions during the Slalom portion of the race were starting to eat kids up during the second run and Justin was able to power through and capitalize on the situation.

“I’m very proud of how he was able to fight through such a tough field of kids and finish on top.”

Souhegan in the GS was fifth led by Aidan Leary (15th, 50.28), Fritz (18th, 50.76), Upton (34, 54.10) and Aidan Lawrence (36, 54.75).
