Locals do well in Division XC Meets; HB girls volleyball in semis

It was a good day for local teams at the NHIAA Cross Country Divison Championships at Manchester’s Derryfield Park, highlighted by the Bishop Guertin, Souhegan and Campbell Girls.

Also, the Hollis Brookline girls volleyball team topped Alvirne to advance to the semis.

Today is another huge day, highlighted by the Nashua South at Merrimack football quarterfinal and the Souhegan girls field hockey team traveling to Kennett of Conway in the Division II championship.

Here’s a look at Saturday and ahead to Sunday:

CROSS COUNTRY

DIVISION I BOYS

Concord conquered the day winning the team overall with 28 points. Bishop Guertin placed third (105), Nashua North was fourth (139), Nashua South finished seventh (239), Merrimack ended in ninth (243) and Alvirne placed 11th (277). Nate Fondakowski (BG) was the highest finishing local runner placing sixth with a time of 16:51.11. Ryan Fischer from Merrimack finished 14th (17:19.90), Sebastian Zeman was 15th (17:24.98) for BG, Joshua Felo was 17th (17:27.89) for Merrimack and North’s James Reel finished 18th (17:53.67).

Other key local finishers were Alex Girata (25th, 18:05.04, BG), Matthew Robert (24th, 17:59.66, North), Robert Canaway (24th, 18:03.13, North), Juho Hahto (34th, 18:25.67, South), Alex Thibeault (39th, 18:35.27, South), Connor Theodore (52nd, 18:56.10, South), Daniel Bartus (62nd, 19:20.40, Merrimack), Cooper Downey (35th, 18:26.06, Alvirne), John Crawford (46th, 18:51.13, Alvirne) and AJ Prescotte (63rd, 19:37.14, Alvirne).

Bishop Guertin and Nashua North will make an appearance at the Meet of Champions next Saturday at South.

DIVISION I GIRLS

Concord finished its dominant day accumulating 52 points for the team win. Bishop Guertin was fourth (127), Nashua South finished sixth (148), Nashua North placed seventh (213) and Merrimack was 13th (360).

BG’s MaryKate Finn had a great run with a time of 19:56.02, finishing in the runner up spot. Nadia Zhecheva from South was seventh (20:45.20), BG’s Fiona Doherty placed ninth (20:58.11), North’s Dantia Braccio was 13th (21:09.01), Merrimack’s Adele Aleander was 16th (21:14.69), South’s Jenna Lecklider was 17th (21:16.05) and BG’s Madeleine Moynihan finished 20th (21:24.17).

Elizabeth White (36th) and Rose Goyette (60th) helped the Cardinals to their top five team finish. Other local finishes were Meghna Conway (25th, 21:33.90, South), Mariana Santos (43rd, 22:27.65, North), Annika Hayden (48th, 22:46.38, North), Lilli Dabilis (80th, 25:16.19, Merrimack) and Eilish Gunther (87th, 26:54.32, Merrimack). Bishop Guertin and Nashua South will contend in the Meet of Champions next week.

DIVISION II BOYS

Coe-Brown took the team championship collecting 23 points. Souhegan finished sixth (182), Hollis Brookline was 10th (324) and Milford placed 12th (334). Milford’s Caleb Korthals was the highest finishing local runner in 11th (16:36.30). Souhegan’s top finishers were Kariso Anderson (26th, 17:46.48), Nolan Dickinson (32nd, 18:01.63) and Ethan McFee (38th, 18:11.34).

Hollis Brookline’s Troy Moscatelli (37th, 18:10.58), Luke Laborde (39th, 18:16.24) and Ryan Burgher (76th, 19:32.25) were the Cavs highest finishing runners. Milford was represented by Korthals, Daniel Sixon (65th, 19:15.45) and Caeleb Fortunato (72nd, 19:29.99).

DIVISION II GIRLS

Coe-Brown finished the meet with 36 points and the championship. Souhegan had a solid third place run (93), while Milford was 10th (277) and Hollis Brookline ended the day in 15th (390). Souhegan’s Chloe Trudel placed runner up (18:28.80) and her teammate Stephanie Svendsen ran fifth (19:56.25), while Milford’s Abbey Halloran finished 20th (21:15.41).

Emma Jarnagin (25th, 21:33.31), Audrey Littlefield (30th, 22:00.32) and Madeleine Glover (31st, 22:00.72) added to Souhegan’s top three team finish.

The Sabers will also compete in next week’s Meet of Champions. Other local finishers were Milford’s Anna Philbrick (29th, 21:53.97) and Victoria Cornaro (53rd, 23:28.61) and Hollis Brookline’s Amy Pattelena (37th, 22:17.59), Ava Moyer (69th, 24:49.39) and Bree Buckland (71st, 24:57.68).

DIVISION III BOYS

Monadnock bested the rest of the field to win the championship tallying 45 points. Campbell finished 15th with 322 points. Keegan Reynolds finished 16th (18:06.03), Devin Lenkl was 38th (19:05.12) and Bryce Kepple placed 77th (20:50.95) were the highest finsihers for the Cougars.

DIVISION II GIRLS

Hopkinton racked up 67 points for the championship. Campbell had a runner up finish with 110 points.

Megan Whitnell had a great sixth place run (20:17.57), Cassie Hemming was 13th (21:25.94) and Riley Gamache finished 21st (22:05.41) for the Cougars. Campbell will compete in next week’s Meet of Champions.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

DIVISION I QUARTERFINALS

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 3,

ALVIRNE 0

The Cavaliers moved on to the semis with a 25-20, 25-11, 25-13 sweep of the Broncos (6-5) in Hudson.

Leading the way for HB (10-2) were Sarah Dreyer with seven kills and thre aces, plus Hana Close with six kills and eight digs. Other Cav keys were Cheyenne Colbert (six kills, two blocks), Emily Dreyer (six kills), Angelina Leonard (26 assists) and Jess Cooper (eight digs, three aces).

HB moves on now to take on Londonderry on Wednesday in the Division I semis, location and time to be determined. The Cavs beat the Lancers 3-0 two weeks ago.

TODAY’S GAMES

While the Nashua South football team tangles with the Tomahawks at Merrimack’s Student Memorial Field, the Souhegan Sabers will vie for their third field hockey title ever, making the long trip to Kennett in a 1 p.m. battle of unbeatens. The Sabers won the Division II crown in 2004 and 2007 and fell to Hanover in last year’s finals.

There are three soccer games of note today as well as unbeaten Bishop Guertin heads to Hudson for a 2 p.m. Division I girls soccer quarterfinal, and Milford takes on Hollis Brookline in the girls Division II quarters.

The day begins, though, at 10 a.m.in Hollis with the Cavs hosting Souhegan in the Division I quarters.
