HS Roundup: Cavs hope for golf title; BG girls soccer now 7-0

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Oct 15, 2020

This is the chance the Hollis Brookline High School golf team has been waiting a year for.

Weather last October doused a chance for the Cavaliers to give a run for a state title, and they ended up being second to Kennett as the NHIAA went by the regular season standings.

Well, today they will have sunny skies and low 70-degree weather at Keene Country Club in an attempt to win it in tourney fashion.

“The boys are eager to show their skills,” Cavs coach Shaun Hastings said. “Last year was tough, this year has been as well being that we have more than five seniors that are all playing really well.”

And the field is reduced due to the pandemic, and Hastings had to make some choices but let the numbers dictate things. The Cavs have been led all year by Garrett and Grady Sturges, plus Colin MacDonadl, Rory Klauber, Matt Dias, Cayden Plummer and a host of others.

“This is the best tam I’ve had the privilege to be a part of,” Hastings said. The players have such a connection and support each other to no end.”

Oyster River is likely the Cavs’ main competition – both went unbeaten in the abbreviated fall season – but there will be others as well, including Goffstown.

“We’re looking forward to the competition with a good amount of other great teams,” Hastings said. “It’s going to be tight at the top to say the least.”

Milford is only sending a few golfers due to transportation issues, emphasizing the individual event instead (this is also the first day for that). Jacob Dube averaged around a 39 and is looking to make the cut. Souhegan is also expected to compete today, but the Sabers have struggled much of the season.

INDIVIDUAL TOURNEY REVISED/RESCHEDULED

Rather than wrap up the Division II and IV individual golf tourney this weekend at Concord’s Beaver Meadow, before Division I and III have even had their rescheduled team tourneys, the NHIAA has rescheduled everything to Sunday, Oct. 25. And Beaver Meadow is out of the mix.

Divisions I and III will have their individual event that day at Concord Country Club at 10:30 a.m. Divsion II will be at Windham Country Club at noon, while Division IV is in this area at Souhegan Woods at 11:20 a.m.
