FOOTBALL FRIDAY: A capsule look at this weekend’s games

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Oct 9, 2020

Telegraph photo by TOM KING Curtis Harris-Lopez (2) and his Titan teammate Liam Novak will be back in action after a week off on Saturday night vs. Bishop Guertin.

There are three big all-local matchups to highlight the football schedule this weekend, including Alvirne at Nashua South and Souhegan at Milford tonight, and Nashua North at Bishop Guertin on Saturday night.

Also, note that due to COVID concerns/quarantine, Merrimack’s game at Salem has been cancelled. The Tomahawks are hoping to be back in action next Friday at Nashua South.

Here’s our weekly capsule look at the local schedule:

DIVISION I

ALVIRNE (0-2) at NASHUA SOUTH (0-2)

WHEN: Tonight, 6:30

WHERE: Nashua’s Stellos Stadium.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

LAST WEEK: Goffstown 35, Alvirne 6; Pinkerton 33, Nashua South 7.

FYI: Something will give as these two teams are seeking their first wins. The Panthers, led by QB Chris Keefe, will look to get their offense in gear against a young Alvirne team; they’ve only scored 14 points in two games. Alvirne QB Kyle Gora will try to get his team going as well.

NASHUA NORTH (1-0) at BISHOP GUERTIN (0-2)

WHEN: Saturday, 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: Stellos Stadium.

LAST YEAR: North 35, BG 0.

LAST WEEK: Souhegan 17, Bishop Guertin 7; North did not play.

FYI: The Titans, led by arguably the state’s best skill position player in Curtis Harris-Lopez, will try to shake the rust off. Guertin, meanwhile, will try to get its offense in gear after seven turnovers last week. They’ve used two QBs so far in Dylan Santosuosso and Josh Larson and of course Brendan Callahan will try to be a sparkplug.

DIVISION II

SOUHEGAN (2-0) at MILFORD (1-0)

WHEN: Tonight,6:30 p.m.

WHERE: Milford High School.

LAST YEAR: Souhegan 46, Milford 43.

LAST WEEK: Souhegan 17, Bishop Guertin 7; Milford 26, Hollis Brookline 24.

FYI: This probably shouldn’t be as high scoring as last year’s shootout; the Spartans, with their running attack led by juniors Caden Zalenski and Logan Barnhill, will look to control the ball and the clock. The Sabers are hoping to get running back Riley Lawhorn going after he was held in check by the Cards last week. But they have a great passing attack thanks to senior Austin Jain. Should be a good one between two rivals.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE (0-2) at SANBORN ( 0-2)

WHEN: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Sanborn Regional HS

LAST YEAR: HB 50, Sanborn 0

LAST WEEK : Milford 26, HB 24; Timberlane 42, Sanborn 14

FYI: Sanborn has struggled mightily this year, having been outscored 84-14 in its first two games. It should be another banner rushing day for Cavs back Marc-Andrea Thermitus, who rushed for a whoppig 318 yards last week against Milford. HB is hungry for its first win.

DIVISION III

LACONIA (0-2) at CAMPBELL (0-2)

WHEN: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Campbell High School in Litchfield.

LAST YEAR: Campbell 32, Laconia 8

LAST WEEK: Monadnock 44, Laconia 8; Pelham 40, Campbell 0

FYI: Both teams are smarting after lopsided losses, but the Cougars played Monadnock tough in their opener and seem to be few levels above the Sachems. Watch for Cougars running back Hunter Caron to have a big day as this is a perfect opportunity for Campbell to get its first win and then perhaps even their record next week at Sanborn.
