North ends South streak, 3-1; Cards, ‘Hawks split in soccer

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Sep 22, 2020

New season, new result.

That’s how the Nashua High School North girls volleyball team sees it after it ended a mulit-year drought vs. city rival Nashua South with a 3-1 win on Monday night at the Belanger Gym.

South took the first set 25-21, but the Titans captured the next three by counts of 25-18, 26-24, and 25-20.

“It’s been four or five years since the girls beat South, they’re really happy,” Titans coach Nicole Fitzgibbons said. “But we’re all Nashua, we love to have that competitive rivalry.”

Alyssa Stanton had four aces, seven digs, and nine kills for the Titans, while Mina Regnery had six aces and three digs. North senior libero Jamie Parker had seven digs and four aces, while Kelsey Laliberte added eight kills.

For the Panthers, Natalie Boyle led the way with 11 kills, while Carol Leigh Leatherman added six. Anne Sherman had 25 assists.

The Titans got a glimpse of what might be when they rallied from 10 points down to make things interesting in the first set.

“If there’s one thing I can’t coach, it’s how to not roll over and give in on a fight,” North coach Nicole Fitzgibbons said. “They battled back. I said we still had three games if we wanted to play them, come out strong. Just cleaning up the errors and keeping that fight we were able to get momentum.”

It was the first loss for the defending Division I Panthers since the 2019 Division I semifinals. They get a chance to avenge the loss tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., this time at North.

“I think we fought hard, the girls had a lot of fun,” first-year South coach Erica Vendituoli said. “There’s a lot of stuff to work on. I’m glad we get to play them again on Wednesday.”
