NASHUA – It worked so well the first time, why not try it again?

Nashua High School North football coach and athletics coordinator Dante Laurendi announced on Tuesday that the North athletic department would be running another food drive to help support End 68 Hours of Hunger. Also, the Nashua South football team will also be helping the drive.

The drive will be this Saturday from 10 a.m.to 12 p.m. The North football and baseball programs held the first food drive last month, and even with little advance notice, it was a success. Nashua South football coach Scott Knight expressed interest then about having his players help out, and that’s what will happen Saturday.

“We had great response from our community last time,” Laurendi said. “Hopefully we can have a even better turnout this week.”

Laurendi will be in the North bus loop on Saturday to handle the donations that can be dropped off.

“Of course,” he said, “we will be practicing safe social distancing.”

There was an interesting move by Alvirne athletic director Karen Bonney late last month to have parents of any students who planned to participate in a spring sport, prior to the cancellation of the season, register their athlete.

It was a way, she said, to recognize and give student-athletes credit for participating in the spring season.

“The reason why I am asking for this,” Bonney said in an email that was posted on the Alvirne athletics social media account, “is to ensure that all of the athletes who planned on participating in this spring season get credited for it even though the season was cancelled.”

Bonney said it was important for seniors to register to be eligible to be recognized as 12-season athletes, and just as important for the underclassmen.

This is likely a symbolic concept used by several schools to give the athletes credit for the season despite it not being played.

Nashua North golf coach Scott Anderson brought up another point of just how much Green Meadow Golf Course will be missed by the high school golfers if it is indeed sold and closed by the end of the golf season.

“The starters who worked at Green Meadow had an amazing connection with our players,” he said. “They would follow their results and saw the progression from freshmen to seniors.

“Kind of made it not only a Nashua thing or a Green Meadow thing. It was more like a supportive family.”

A reminder that Holman and Stellos Stadiums will be closed to the public when the lights are turned on for 20 minutes at both facilities at 8:20 Wednesday night. The event, organized by the Nashua Athletic Department, is to recognize all high school seniors, not just student athletes.
