NASHUA – They always say, you win with seniors.

Thus, the Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team went to that well Saturday night and it worked out nicely for an expected 60-24 Division I quarterfinal win over No. 8 Concord at the Colligadome.

“We definitely have the most experience out of all the teams, so I think that definitely helps going down the stretch in the playoffs,” said senior guard Erin Carney, who scored 14 points and keyed a big 14-2 run at the end of the third quarter that turned a 12 point lead into a 48-24 lead after three.

In fact, the Cards (18-1, 19-3 overall) pitched a shutout in the fourth period as the Tide, who were still in the game at 34-22 with 2:49 left in the third, wilted.

Guertin now moves on to face No. 4 Bedford in Thursday’s semifinals at Exeter High School. In a night of upsets – lower seeds Goffstown and Londonderry pulled shockers over Memorial and Merrimack, respectively – the Cardinals did more than survive.

“The older girls kind of put the pedal to the metal in the third quarter,” Cards coach Brad Kreick said, “and did what kids like that do.”

Still, Guertin only led 29-16 at the half against the No. 8 Tide, who finish at 13-7. Concord, which got eight points each from Megan Cox and Elizabeth Blinn, played with no fear despite seeing BG for the first time.

“I was so proud of our guys,” Concord coach Tim LaTorra said. “Bishop Guertin, they’re a well-oiled machine, we’ve got competitive kids. We started to get tired, started to lose our composure a bit.”

That coud have happened to the Cards in the second period when Addison Smith and Bri Wilcox both had two fouls and sat. But Guertin’s army of freshmen came through, led by Meghan Stack (seven points) and Brooke Paquette (five). Smith still finished with 14 points and Wilcox 12.

“I’ll tell you, the freshman really stepped up big,” Kreick said. “They gave us huge minutes in the second quarter when Bri and Addie were in foul trouble.

We spent the entire year putting those freshmen in difficult situations so that when we needed them in a situation like that tonight, they delivered for us and they were great.”
