Cougar girls pull upset at STA; BG hockey wins at buzzer

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Feb 27, 2020

It was a day/night for dramatic wins for local teams, as first the Campbell girls upset St. Thomas in the final seconds of their state basketball tourney prelim.

Then later Wednesday night the Bishop Guertin boys hockey team got a goal literally at the buzzer to edge Salem.

Here’s a look at those and other results:

GIRLS BASKETBALL

DIVISION III PRELIMS

NO. 9 CAMPBELL 53,

NO. 8 ST. THOMAS 51

Tori Allen got the game winning hoop with five seconds left as the visiting Cougars (10-9) now advance to face No. 1 Conant (18-0) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Karleigh Schultz added 16 points while Riley Gamache had nine.

The Cougars have had a tough time with Conant, losing twice this season by counts of 56-36 and then 73-29 less than a week ago.

REGULAR SEASON

KEARSARGE 58,

SOUHEGAN 34

The visiting Sabers fell to 4-13 in Division II despite 10 points each from Katie Canavan and Halle VanBallegooven.

Souhegan wraps up the season Friday at home vs. Oyster River.

BOYS BASKETBALL

WILTON-LYNDEBOROUGH 66,

NUTE 61

The Warriors went 20 for 22 from the free throw line and Jack Schwab pumped in 32 points as they wrapped up the regular season at 6-12 in Division IV.

Kyler Tremblay added 17 while Sean Brennan had 11.

SOUHEGAN 55,

KEARSARGE 38

The Sabers led 27-21 and pulled away in the second half, holding the visitors to seven fourth quarter points to improve to 8-7 in Division II.

Matt McCool led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Dawson Mamele added eight and Curtis Reed 7 for the Sabers, who visit Oyster River on Friday.

BOYS HOCKEY

BISHOP GUERTIN 5,

SALEM 4

The Cardinals won in dramatic fashion with a Mike Kiely goal off the faceoff with 0.3 seconds left after Salem had tied the game at 4 with seven ticks remaining.

Kiely buried a rebound on a shot off the faceoff by Sean Kelley.

Kiely and Patrick Madden each scored two goals at Skate 3 as the Cardinals moved to 11-6.

The Cards also got goals by Ben Young (Derek Amaral, Mike Schaaf assists). Sam Cronin assisted on Madden’s first goal.

Evan Butler played well in net for BG, which wraps up the regular season on Saturday vs. Londonderry at Tri-Town Arena in Hooksett.

TRINITY 6,

NASHUA NORTH-SOUHEGAN 1

Griff Masseur scored the Saber-Titans’ lone goal on a 5-on-3 power play as the locals wrapped up the regular season at 6-9-3. The Saber-Titans are hoping to officially grab one of the final two Division I tourney spots.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE-DERRYFIELD 3,

BELMONT-GILFORD 1 (OT)

The Warriors improved to 13-4 thanks to Aidan Chretien’s goal in the sudden death extra session.

Chretien added an assist while Nick Dapolito and Paul Vachon each had a goal and Cole Giersch added two assists.

Rylan Morgan stood tall between the pipes with 33 shots.

HBD winds up its regular season on Saturday vs. John Stark-Hopkinton at Conway Arena at 4:40 p.m. A win likely gives the Warriors the second seed in the upcoming Division III tourney; a loss might put them as the fourth seed.

GIRLS HOCKEY

SOUHEGAN 2,

BRADY-WEST-TRINITY 1

Ryleigh Tobin got both Saber goals with assists from Clare Woodford and Abby Hawkes as Souhegan moved to 6-9-1.

Elle Byram, back from an illness, made 20 saves in the Saber net. Souhegan wraps up the regular season by hosting Kingswood on Saturday at Conway Arena
