TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. – A typically challenging cross-over game with Massachusetts power Malden Catholic took on extra heat when Bishop Guertin hockey coach Gary Bishop found himself short three regulars due to injury here at Skate 3 on Monday night.

The Cardinals did all the things necessary when down players. Guys stepped up. They played disciplined, tight defensive hockey and they picked up a sharp, 22-save performance from Chris Sullivan in goal.

It just wasn’t enough. A flukey goal, but nonetheless a goal from MC’s Ty Blumberg just 1:04 into the game proved to be the only goal of the night as the Cards fell, 1-0. Guertin’s second straight loss sent the season mark to 8-4, heading into Wednesday night’s (5:50 p.m.) battle here with 7-5 Pinkerton Academy.

“They’re a great test, absolutely,” said Bishop of the visiting 5-5-3 Lancers. “I thought we hung in well. We just couldn’t find the back of the net. They’re goaltender played well, and I thought our goaltender played well. We just couldn’t find a goal.”

Guertin’s best period was the second where the Cardinals took it to the visitors in a fast-moving up-and-down stanza.

Guertin dominated zone time, but MC had the better chances and Sullivan stood tall on all of them.

There were some positives as the Cardinals played tough without Max Trawick, Mike Kiely and Aaron Pratt.

“We had three JV kids come up. I thought a couple of them played really well,” said Bishop. “Johnny Mantone played really well. Logan Vogel came up and gave us some good shifts. Austin Abbott, too. The three kids really held their own.”

Derek Amaral and Patrick Madden logged their usual heavy ice time and battled.

“Plus a couple of the younger kids who usually don’t see much playing time showed well,” said Bishop. Christian Milward stepped right into the second line and had a great night for himself.”

Getting healthy is a top priority for Guertin as the stretch run approaches. Still, it’s good to see the depth.

“I don’t know when they are coming back. We play Wednesday, and they all say they will be ready,” said Bishop. “You just don’t know.”
