Q&A with Nashua North’s Josh Constant

By Hector Longo - Staff Writer | Jan 30, 2020

For a high school senior, there is no true gauge to judge how your season is going.

Or is there?

On Wednesday night, the Nashua North-Souhegan hockey coaches walked over to Josh Constant before the game with Alvirne-Milford and handed him a captain’s “C” for his No. 22 home sweater.

“He deserves it. He’s a great kid and he’s working so hard,” said Saber-Titans’ coach Matt Osgood.

Just past the midpoint of the campaign, Constant had his answer.

“It’s an honor,” said the four-year varsity winger. “I like to lead by example. I want to see these kids grow and progress, not just in the game of hockey but as young men, too. Grow up, be respectful and be part of the community.”

After Velcro-ing the “C” on his jersey and helping the Saber-Titans knock off Alvirne-Milford, Constant took a few minutes to discuss things on the ice and delve a little deep into his own personal toolbox.

So tell us about the season. It looks like you guys are giving it all you’ve got out there?

“I’m loving it. I love it every day. Every day waking up, going to school, coming to practice, working hard. I love the kids. I love the atmosphere, I love the coaches, I love everything about it.”

Talk about the Nashua North-Souhegan co-op dynamic. Is it tough to play with kids from two different schools?

“I don’t see it as two different schools to be honest. I see it as one big family. I may not see other kids in school every single day, but you look in that locker room, we’re all one. Everybody’s brothers. We all pick each other up when we are down, make each other work hard.”

Talk about Josh Constant, the player?

“I’m not the most talented player in the world. I’m not going to say I am, because I’m not. I like to think I have a little bit of tenacity. I like to work hard. I like to set up plays, I like to bring that mentality that we can do this, no matter what.”

How about the guys on your line?

“I think our linemates are great. Right now, I play with Michael Dodge (junior) and Will Dodge (freshman). Mike is an awesome kid. He’s a lot more fancy than I am on the ice. He’s a good playmaker but he’s just a great kid. Will’s a little bit more goofy than Mike is, but they work so hard. They listen to what coach tells us to do.”

Any other sports?

“I’ve only played hockey, but I would like to start lacrosse. Nashua North is not the greatest team in the world, but it’s another sport to keep me in shape. I might give it a try this spring. I do a lot of running in the summer, running 5Ks and stuff. I have to stay in shape. I like to be active.”

So graduation is just a few months away. What’s the plan for the future?

“I have my apprentice license to become an electrician. I work part-time as an electrician right now. My uncle is a plumber, another is an electrician, my dad is a landlord. They’re all in the trades. I see they’re making good money. They all own their own businesses, that’s what I’d like to do. I’m a more hands-on guy. I like to work on cars. Next year, the plan is to be an electrician and maybe play some junior hockey, so we’ll see.”
