Broncos Lock Up Seven Seed, Top Merrimack
The Broncos locked up the seventh seed in the Division I playoffs after they topped Merrimack, 4-2. The Tomahawks clinched the 16th seed as a result of Trinity’s loss to Timberlane.
Robbie Flohr pitched the entire game for Alvirne (10-8), allowing only one earned run on five hits. He picked a runner off third with the bases loaded in the third and proceeded to retired 13 of the next 14 batters.
Flohr also helped the Broncos on offense, knocking in a run on a single. Anthony Cestrone had two hits and scored a run on a double steal while teammate Jacen Hudson had an RBI sacrifice fly. Ethan Beals had his first varsity hit in the game, an RBI single.
First baseman Derek Hudson was a standout defensively for Alvirne, recording 12 putouts. Shortstop Dan Brown had five assists.
Freshman Justin Grassini took the loss for Merrimack (6-12), allowing three earned runs on three hits and five walks. The Tomahawks got their first run on a bases-loaded walk in the first. They scored later in the game on an RBI single from Mark Feeney.
