Bishop Guertin girls don’t qualify for tennis tournament

By Staff | May 27, 2014

Bishop Guertin girls tennis is considered the class of Division I – make that was. The Cardinals entered the spring on a 68-game winning streak with four straight titles to their credit.

An 8-1 loss to Bedford on opening day snapped BG’s win streak, and inconsistent play the rest of the way by the Cardinals resulted in a three-way tie at 8-6 with Concord and Pinkerton Academy for the eighth and final playoff spot. After tiebreakers were determined, BG will miss the postseason entirely.

The Cardinals never won more than two matches in a row. All of their losses came against playoff teams, including a crucial loss to Concord late in the season. That match would eventually determine the playoff spot.

Across the city, Nashua South is looking to make some noise as the fourth seed. The Panthers will face off against Winnacunnet in the first round, a squad South narrowly beat early in the season. Undefeated Bedford tops the Division I bracket.

The Nashua North (8-6) and Alvirne (7-7) boys wrapped up the seventh and eighth seeds, respectively. The two teams finished with respectable records, but earned the majority of their victories by capitalizing on weaker opponents. Other than North’s win over Alvirne in early April, the two teams failed to earn a victory against a fellow playoff team. It won’t be easy for either squad in the first round, as Alvirne takes on No. 1 Bedford and North visits No. 2 Keene.

The Souhegan boys earned the final playoff spot in Division II after finishing in a tie with Kennett for eighth place. The Sabers will face off against a undefeated, top-seeded Derryfield.

The Hollis Brookline girls followed up a solid 2013 campaign with an even better 2014. The Cavaliers finished 11-3, but that record was only good enough for the fifth seed in Division II. The Cavaliers get No. 4 Bishop Brady in their opener. Seventh-seeded Souhegan (9-5) will go against No. 2 Hanover in the first round. St. Thomas earned the top seed.

A 7-2 stretch allowed the Wilton-Lyndeborough boys to sneak into the Division III playoffs as the sixth seed. The Warriors, who outscored their opponents 61-20 over the span, are hoping their hot streak continues into the playoffs. They open in Wolfeboro versus third-seeded Kingswood.

“The guys are up for it,” WLC coach John Williams said. “For them, just making it to the playoffs is a big deal. I think for us to beat Kingswood, everybody will have to play at their very best.”

Gilford tops the boy’s bracket. On the girls side, it will likely be a four-team competition between Moultonborough, Bow, Conant and Littleton.
