Patriots sign veteran kicker Nuget to fill void
The New England Patriots have solved their kicker issue, for now.
The team Thursday signed veteran Mike Nugent, a former New York Jets second round draft choice, to replace Stephen Gostkowski, who is out for the season with a hip injury.
Nugent, 37, has kicked for eight NFL teams – the Jets, Buccaneers, Giants, Bears, Bengals, Cardinals, Cowboys and Raiders. His longest tenure was with the Bengals from 2010-15. Last season he was with the Raiders but was placed on injured reserve in late September due to, ironically, a hip injury. Before that he made all six of his field goal attempts and four of five extra points.
His career field goal percentage is 81.4 percent and 96.3 on PATs.
Nugent was drafted 47th overall by the Jets in 2005 out of Ohio State. His career longest field goal is 55 yards.
