No mystery behind the appeal of Arthur T.

By Staff | Aug 10, 2014

The Christmas movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” is an apt analogy for the Market Basket struggle. We rejoice when good guy George Bailey’s “put people first” approach to life triumphs over bad guy Potter’s unfeeling, greedy and avaricious business model that views people like cattle. Market Basket has thrived under Arthur T. Demoulas’ “put people first” direction. While today’s middle class is being squeezed for every last dime by businesses who charge credit card fees, luggage fees, late fees, ATM fees, etc., Market Basket has honored its customers with a high quality product at a good price. While other companies are eliminating health care, pensions and a decent living wage, Market Basket has rewarded its employees for outstanding service. It comes as no surprise that Arthur T. has generated such overwhelming support and loyalty from the people he serves. If he sold his shares to Market Basket and opened up his own chain of stores, there’s no doubt in my mind who’d win in that head-to-head competition.
