Alderman: Process was messy but productive

By Staff | Jan 8, 2014

Sunday’s organizational meeting was not unlike labor pains in that, it was painful, but it gave birth to the 2014-15 Board of Aldermen. It wasn’t pretty; it was quite messy, yet the results were truly a win-win for the board and city of Nashua.

Since four members of the board did not get our preferred assignments, as is tradition, several of us emailed or called President-elect David Deane, asking him to consider making minor adjustments to the committees by respectfully honoring everyone’s first choice. He refused, and even stated at the meeting that he didn’t really look at the surveys, but made decisions based on what he felt would be best for the city. Whether he was inspired by the debate or realized that he would probably not get elected president unless he changed assignments is known only to himself. The ensuing drama hopefully will stay in the “birthing process” and out of the aldermanic chamber. One thing you can bet on – it’s not business as usual. You didn’t want that and neither did we.

Please be patient with us as we find our footing, learn the lay of the land and grow together. We are here to serve you as best we can and the process will probably not be graceful at first. I will, however, guarantee thought-provoking debate.
