Thankful for Right to Know efforts

By Staff | Dec 19, 2013

Once again, hats off to The Telegraph for its efforts in ensuring that the Right to Know Law is being followed by our elected city officials. For the past 4–5 years, the public has witnessed closed-door meetings, legislation submitted at the last minute and refusal to answer some of the questions associated with our yearly budget.

For those who recently wrote to The Telegraph perplexed about the need for The Telegraph’s efforts, all one had to do was view the aldermanic and committee meetings to notice some of the aldermen and citizen speakers vent frustration about the lack of requested information, lack of appropriate costing for submitted legislation and, yes, at times outright refusal to provide labor and other costing when requested. This arrogance of the Lozeau and McCarthy terms, perhaps to some degree, explains the surprising rejection of many incumbent aldermen by Nashua citizens at the last election. Now we have another alderman, Diane Sheehan, who would prefer that voting for the president of the Board of Aldermen be done by secret ballot instead of in full view of the public. Thankfully, that was reversed by the board through a motion by Alderman-elect Mike Soucy. Perhaps some of those aldermen who seem to come across as supporting closed secret government should follow the leadership of the new aldermen.

So, thanks again to The Telegraph for the great job you do regarding the Right to Know Law. Most of us appreciate it.
