George F. Donovan

Dec 5, 2019

George F. Donovan, 70, of Nashua, NH, passed away on November 30, 2019 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack. He managed to maintain his sense of humor even on the most challenging days. He was born in Stoneham, MA on May 18, 1949, the son of the late James and Eileen (Donovan) Donovan. He was a loving, devoted husband to Carol (Knowlton) Donovan for 47 years.

George graduated from Stoneham High School in 1968, joined the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam Era, and then went on to graduate from Northeastern University in 1977. He began his career with the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1978, working at V. A. hospitals all around the country until his retirement in 2010. His last stop was the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, MA. He made many long-lasting relationships along the way. After retirement, he worked for Meals on Wheels, volunteered at SNHMC, and coached Junior Biddy Basketball in Nashua for 20 years.

George was predeceased by his grandson, Jacob Stewart. He is survived by his children Lynne Champney and husband Dan, Lori Bedell and husband Chad, Brian Donovan and partner Liz Kendricken. He was “Grampy” to his three granddaughters, Charlotte and Caroline Bedell and Abby Stewart, who he cherished with all his heart. He is also survived by his siblings Jane Donovan, Jim Donovan and Sheila Holt and special cousins Dick Longo, Michael Longo and Andy Longo.

The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visiting hours. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in George’s memory, to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua (www.bgcn.com). Besides his family and friends, George’s greatest loves were sports and children. He never stopped watching or playing any sport, but basketball was his passion.
