Sophie Aleksiejewicz Laine

Sophie Aleksiejewicz Laine, age 98, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Friday, November 9, 2018 at the Courville at Nashua. She was born on March 7, 1920 in Boston, MA, the daughter of the late Anthony and Frances (Domurat) Aleksiejewicz.

Sophie was very proud of her contributions as one of the Nation’s first female weather staffers in the United States Weather Bureau during WWII. Sophie and her husband, Woitto T. Laine, raised their four children in Dedham, MA, where they lived for over 40 years. After retirement, they moved to South Yarmouth, MA where Sophie enjoyed visiting antique and thrift shops, watching the waves, and attending church ham and bean suppers.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Woitto, who passed away on October 2, 2002, Sophie was predeceased by her two sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Linda Banner and her husband Clif of Nashua; J. Stan Laine of Sandwich, MA; Susan Sammour and her husband Philippe of Ypsilanti, MI; and Anita Spencer and her husband David of Effingham, NH; grandchildren, Ben and Aleks Banner; Anthony, Christina and Joseph Sammour; and Alison, Cheryl and Eric Spencer; and a great granddaughter, Elaina Sammour. Sophie also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and other loving extended family members and friends, including her South Yarmouth friend and neighbor, Helga Savage.

SERVICES: Sophie will be interred along with her husband at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
