2 dead after fire in 2 buildings in New Bedford

By The Associated Press - | Apr 20, 2021

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Two people are dead after a fire ripped through two buildings in New Bedford early Monday, officials said.

Acting Fire Chief Scott Kruger said two deaths were confirmed, but no further details are being provided until next of kin can be notified.

About 40 people were displaced in the fire in two mixed use residential and commercial buildings on Acushnet Avenue, Kruger said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Kruger said it appears the fire started in an area common to both buildings.

“Both of them caught on fire at about the same time,” he said. “They were mirroring each other as far as fire was doing the same thing in both buildings, so early on, it presented a challenge. We needed more manpower.”
