State police plan to move Middlesex barracks to Berlin

By Staff | Oct 3, 2020

BERLIN, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont State Police are planning to move their Middlesex barracks to a vacant state building in Berlin.

Officials had estimated that it would cost up to $12 million to tear down and rebuild the Middlesex barracks, which has issues from sewage backup to the lack of a proper holding cell and controlled entryway, WCAX-TV reported Friday.

“The Middlesex barracks is in serious need of upgrades, it’s gone well past its time,” Vermont State Police Captain Garry Scott said. State police started looking through the county for another location and discovered that the Berlin library is an area that the state already owned, he said. State police are able to move into that location for under $3 million currently, Scott said.

The library will only need to be fitted with holding cells, saving time on upgrades, he said. It’s also right off the interstate in a more centralized area, he said. State police hope to start the project sometime next year, Scott said.
