Nashua’s next hazardous waste collection day coming up

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Reporter | Sep 19, 2022

NASHUA — Residents of Nashua and 10 area towns who need to dispose of unused household hazardous waste materials are invited to the Nashua Regional Planning Commission’s next collection day on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The collection will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at the city Park & Ride lot at 25 Crown St.

Besides Nashua residents, the collection is open to residents of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Pelham, and Windham.

The cost is $15 per vehicle for quantities of liquid up to 10 gallons and materials up to 20 pounds. Additional fees will be charged for quantities that exceed those amounts.

Examples of items accepted at collection days include oil-based and lead paint and stains, solvents, antifreeze, gasoline, fertilizers, pesticides, mercury, fluorescent bulbs, pool products and photo chemicals.

Items that are not accepted include latex paint, electronics, medication, used oil, car batteries, fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.

For a full list of acceptable and non-acceptable items, and additional information on the NRPC and its collection days, go to www.nashuarpc.org/hhw or call 417-6570.

The next collection day is Saturday, Nov. 5, and is the last one of the season.

According to the NRPC, “bringing your household hazardous waste to a collection event protects people and the environment. When hazardous waste is put in the trash, on the ground, down the sink, or into a storm drain, it can pollute water, threaten human health, and harm wildlife.”

Any leftover household materials with labels that say “caution,” “poison,” “warning,” or “danger” present a risk of injury to household members, including pets, and therefore should be properly disposed of, according to the commission.
