Major brush fire in Brookline draws firefighters from numerous towns

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Reporter | Aug 16, 2022

BROOKLINE — What was initially reported as a brush fire close to a residence at 300 Route 13 early this afternoon quickly spread into surrounding wooded areas, prompting Brookline officials to call for mutual aid assistance from about a dozen area departments.

Indications were that an area measuring roughly 1,500 feet by 1,500 feet was ablaze around mid-afternoon, increasing the demand for tanker trucks to maintain a water supply.

The affected area is in the southern part of town not far from the Milford town line. Whether the bulk of the fire was east or west of Route 13 wasn’t immediately known. Old Milford Road runs off Route 13 just north of the area where the fire began, and immediately west of the road is Melendy Pond.

Whether crews drew water from the pond to refill tanker trucks or set up a “drafting” operation — the process of raising water from a nearby source to supply a pumper truck with water — also wasn’t known.

At one point, several firefighters battling the blaze were attacked and stung by bees, prompting scene commanders to call for an ambulance to have them checked out.

Updates will be provided as they become available.
