Within five hours Sunday, state police cite 59 drivers for going 90 mph or more; three topped 115 mph
Whether drivers with an unusually heavy foot, and those who engage in “other aggressive driving behavior,” were more numerous than usual between 6 and 11 a.m. Sunday isn’t known, but the final tallies as compiled by state police show that this particular “enhanced enforcement detail” was quite productive.
Members of the state police Special Enforcement Unit conducted the detail along a stretch of I-95 in Hampton Falls, police said in a statement issued later Sunday.
Working with them was the department’s Aviation Unit, members of which monitor traffic from the air and have the technology to determine a vehicle’s speed.
By the numbers compiled by police, the troopers working the detail conducted 121 motor vehicle stops during the five-hour period.
Half of those 121 drivers were traveling in excess of 90 mph – 46 of whom were going at least 90, an additional 10 who were traveling in excess of 100 mph, and three others who were clocked going in excess of 115 mph, according to police.
Those who were doing 100 or more, police said, were charged with reckless operation.
The state police Special Enforcement Unit frequently conducts details targeting “elevated speed violations and other aggressive driving behaviors,” according to the statement.
Members of the unit “patrol across the state, often utilizing the department’s Aircraft Unit during commuter traffic periods and holiday travel times.”
The goal, police said, “is keeping New Hampshire’s roadways safe for all residents and visitors.”
