Few protesters at State House on Biden’s inauguration day

By Staff | Jan 21, 2021

CONCORD – On Wednesday a number of New Hampshire State Troopers patrolled the grounds of the State House anticipating protesters against the inauguration of President Joe Biden, but few showed up.

A few Troopers stood in front of the State House steps and an explosive detecting K9 walked the grounds a few times. Concord police officers also walked the sidewalks around the building.

At noontime there was one man who stood in front of the State House steps holding a Trump/Pence sign. A few reporters spoke to him, and he did not identify himself or say where he was from.

On the sidewalk in front of the State House a husband and wife who said they were from Canterbury held signs and a flag. The woman said she is pro-life and concerned about the rights of free speech being taken away.

Twelve members of the media were on hand to interview the couple. People occasionally approached the couple offering support. Some media were set up on the roof of the Sheraton building across the street. Members of the media were from from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and one reporter from the New York Times.

A few vehicles drove by shouting messages, some supportive and some against the people gathered on the sidewalk.

A man parked near the sidewalk of the State House got out and erected an upside down flag on a pole which brought a heated conversation from a man sitting in a pick-up truck. Speaking to the man with the flag, he would only say he was from New Hampshire, and didn’t want to provide his name. He stated he was showing defiance to the election which has officially made Joe Biden the President of the United States. The man said he believes turmoil and protest will continue as people express their concerns.

The only direct interaction with police and the people protesting occurred when the woman from Canterbury approached the Concord police officers and engaged in a brief and friendly conversation.

At 1 p.m. no one holding signs or flags remained in front of the State House. Members of law enforcement remained in the area in cruisers and on foot.

No arrests or conflicts occurred.
