Hikers of all ages, levels and experience can choose from any of New Hampshire’s 93 state parks and historic sites to take part in this year’s modified version of the state’s First Day Hikes program.
Typically held on one day – New Years Day – this year’s event was expanded to seven days, allowing participants to choose the day, and location, of their First Day Hikes.
Organizers, who modified the program with the COVID-19 pandemic in mind, said hikers can do their self-guided hike anytime between Saturday and New Years Day.
“The goal of this yearís hikes is to provide individuals and families the opportunity to safely welcome 2021 in the outdoors while maintaining social distancing practices,” a New Hampshire State Parks spokesman said.
This year is the 10th that New Hampshire has participated in the First Day Hikes program, which is a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors.
“Since this year’s First Day Hikes will be virtual self-guided outings, hikers can choose to explore any of our state historic sites, parks, or recreational rail trails at thier own pace,” the spokesman said, adding that leashed pets are permitted at many parks in the off-season.
More information on the hikes, including locations that are pet-friendly, along with details on how to register for a hike and enter the contest to win a family season pass for the 2021 season and other prizes, can be found at www.nhstateparks.org/news-events/first-day-hike.
