NASHUA – An as yet unidentified 78-year-old woman suffered serious injuries early Saturday afternoon when police say she was struck by a car on Charron Avenue.

The driver of the car, whose name police didn’t release, was not injured, and has been cooperating with the investigation, police said.

They said it does not appear at this point in the investigation that driver impairment involving drugs or alcohol was a factor in the collision.

Police, firefighters and medical personnel were called at about 1:30 p.m. to 28 Charron Ave., which is a short distance east of the intersection of Pine Hill Road and Charron Avenue near Bud Way, a series of office condos on the south side of the road.

Reports indicated first responders called for the activation of the trauma team at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, but a short time later it was decided to request a Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team (DHART) medical helicopter respond to the scene.

While awaiting its arrival, American Medical Response paramedics put the woman into their ambulance and worked to stabilize her and treat her injuries.

Meanwhile, police and firefighters communicated with DHART personnel regarding a landing zone for the helicopter, and upon speaking with police, who had closed the entirety of Charron Avenue to through traffic, decided to have it land at the scene.

Police said only that the woman was flown to an area hospital, but it is believed she was taken to the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, formerly the Lahey Clinic, in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Witnesses to the incident include several employees of a nearby hair salon, who said they went to assist the woman and speak with the driver of the car, whom they described as “visibly shaken up.”

Charron Avenue was closed for an extended period of time Saturday afternoon, as members of the police department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit conducted an on-scene investigation.
