Local group to host ‘Veto Graveyard’

By Staff | Oct 23, 2020

Greater Nashua Rights and Democracy, a local group of people interested in progressive causes, will host a “Veto Graveyard” in front of City Hall Saturday from 2-4 p.m. to highlight the record number of vetos signed by Gov. Chris Sununu.

Tess George, a member of the group’s planning committee, said that the event is meant to draw attention to the governor’s undemocratic methods.

“Governor Sununu vetoed a record 79 bills in just 2 years, undoing the work of our elected officials. Many of these bills passed with bipartisan majorities. This is not governing; this is putting his wishes above those of the people and the legislators.”

The display will feature gravestones for each of the 79 bills vetoed by Governor Sununu, including minimum wage and paid family medical leave.

Brandon LeMay, a regional organizer for Rights and Democracy, said “We want to make this a fun event, but our message is deadly serious. He said that there will be costumed performers reading obituaries for the bills, and they’ll be playing some spooky music. They’ll also have candy available for those who would like it.

Governor Sununu’s veto record has been controversial. Some groups, like Greater Nashua RAD, contend that he is erasing the work of elected officials. Sununu himself defends his methods, saying many of the bills that were passed were not properly vetted.
