Two elderly women injured, one extricated by firefighters Tuesday following crash involving tractor-trailer unit
NASHUA – Firefighters using hydraulic rescue tools conducted a roughly 20-minute extrication process Tuesday morning to free an elderly woman from the wreckage of her car, which had collided with a tractor-trailer unit in the northwest part of town.
The identity of the woman, who is 92, and her passenger were not released as of Tuesday evening, but officials said both were transported to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Deputy Nashua Fire Rescue Chief Glen MacDonald said the hospital activated its trauma team for the driver.
The extent and nature of her injuries weren’t specified, but one of her injuries reportedly involved a cut to the head.
Her condition, and that of her passenger, whose age isn’t known, were unavailable late Tuesday.
MacDonald said firefighters, police and AMR personnel were called shortly after 11 a.m. to the scene of a reported collision involving an automobile and tractor trailer in the area of 6 Trafalgar Square, an office building that’s part of a complex of several such buildings off Somerset Parkway.
First on the scene was the crew of Engine 5, who MacDonald said found the front end of a silver Nissan Altima under the trailer of a FedEx truck, just in front of the trailer’s rear axle.
The passenger was out of the car, MacDonald said, but the driver was still inside and needed to be extricated.
The crew of Ladder 1 went to work with hydraulic rescue tools, first removing the driver’s door then using a “hydraulic ram” to push the car’s roof away from the woman.
Firefighters and paramedics then eased the woman out of the vehicle and onto an awaiting stretcher.
MacDonald said the trailer contained a small amount of temperature-controlled adhesive packed in dry ice and non-hazardous materials, none of which was damaged in the crash.
