United Way of Greater Nashua takes part in ‘challenge grant’

Each donation matched dollar-for-dollar

By Andrea Hanley - Staff Writer | Apr 3, 2020

NASHUA – United Way of Greater Nashua is participating in a Challenge Grant sponsored by AmeriHealth Caritas New Hampshire to aid in the COVID-19 releif efforts.

The grant will match the exact dollar amount up to $25,000 of individual and corporate donations to United Way’s Covid-19 Emergent Needs Fund.

According to a press release from United way, 100 percent of the funds donated will be used “exclusively to support relief efforts in the Greater Nashua Region,” which includes the allocation of smaller grants to local nonprofits that are involved with preventing the spread of COVID-19 and to provide supplies to local agencies that are having difficulty finding or purchasing items that have vanished from grocery store shelves during the outbreak.

As of Wednesday, United Way of Greater Nashua has given grants to more than 20 agencies and distributed thousands of rolls of toilet paper, diapers and hand sanitizer.

United Way’s ” …efforts to deliver immediate relief to those most in need including providing direct support to local agencies where the need is greatest, as well as providing volunteer coordination, serving as a hub for in-kind donations, providing online volunteer-driven grocery delivery services, and distributing food to the region’s school children, exemplify living our mission to help people get care, stay well and build health communities.” said Nicole St. Hilaire, director of member engagement for AmeriHealth Caritas N.H.

“We hope the public steps up to take advantage of this 100 percent match,” said United Way President Mike Apfelberg. “Any time you can give one dollar and make it go twice as far (is) a tremendous opportunity.”

Apfelberg also mentioned that if an individual or corporation is in the position to donate, the recently passed CARES Act stimulus package offers a $300 additional 2020 tax-deduction for those who are “non-itemizers, which is most of us.”
