Altercation amid ‘Fang Fest’ at Souhegan High

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Writer | Feb 20, 2020

AMHERST – A Souhegan High School administrator informed parents by email Wednesday that a “physical altercation” broke out during an “all-school photo” session connected to the school’s annual “Fang Fest,” a week-long series of events described as the school’s version of “spirit week.”

Dean of Students Kelly Driscoll said the altercation involved “several individuals,” and resulted in “minor injury,” but the email didn’t specify how many people were injured or the nature of the injuries.

Driscoll did said school faculty members and the school resource officer “responded immediately,” and the students involved were “removed from the area.”

Driscoll described the incident as “both alarming and upsetting for the entire school community.” She said the school will be utilizing what she called “our support structures” such as student advisory time and its student services department “to help students process the event and address their needs.”

She urged parents to “reach out to your child’s guidance counselor or a trusted adult” if they feel their son or daughter needs additional support.

School officials, Driscoll said, “are in the process of a full investigation,” and expect an “appropriate disciplinary response as outlined in district policy and New Hampshire state law.”

Driscoll added that the school community “looks forward to continuing the joy and celebration that marks Fang Fest.”
