Organizations cultivated by Nashua Garden Club

By Staff | Jan 20, 2020

Though their gardens are buttoned up tightly for the winter, members of the Nashua Garden Club continued to stay busy through the end 2019. In keeping with the spirit of the club’s mission to support the local community, members took time to spread holiday cheer by distributing donations and their time to a number of local organizations.

Each year, the club identifies four benevolent institutions, including one focused on education related to gardening or landscaping, to receive a donation of $250 each. After considering many worthy, local concerns, the club determined this year’s recipients to be Southern New Hampshire Rescue Mission, Nashua Soup Kitchen and Nashua Children’s Home who received their contribution at the beginning of the school year when so much is needed. This year’s educational beneficiary was UNH Co-operative Extension, which plans to put their donation toward initiatives like the UNHCE Education Center and the Master Gardener program.

Additional activities in the spirit of the holiday season were undertaken. For instance, a number of members donated time to decorate Christmas trees and fireplace mantels and bring joy to residents of Langdon Place of Nashua.

“These annual projects are a great way for the club members to learn about the many worthy activities in the Nashua area and also provides a way for the club to give back to the community,” said Lois Scotto, president of the Nashua Garden Club.

During the rest of the year, the Nashua Garden Club sponsors informative and educational programs open to the public, generally held the first Wednesday of each month. Members can also be seen throughout the greater Nashua area, nurturing a variety of gardens such as the Sensory Garden in Greeley Park and the grounds of the Humane Society.
