Wintry mix causes slick road conditions

By ADAM URQUHART - Staff Writer | Dec 31, 2019

NASHUA – Another two-day storm is continuing to cause problems for those commuting across roadways in southern New Hampshire, making for slick conditions during Monday’s travels.

Today, the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, predicts the storm to move out by early afternoon. The storm started in Nashua around 10 p.m. Sunday. Just about 12 hours later, National Weather Service Meteorologist Derek Schroeter had some accumulation reports.

“The most recent report that I’ve received is about seven-tenths of an inch of mostly sleet with some snow mixed in, and the report had a tenth-of-an-inch of freezing rain on top of it,” Schroeter said.

Entering today, the storm is likely to bring more snow in the morning hours, with the possibility of changing to rain at times. For people traveling across the roadways, Schroeter said to certainly take it slow.

“Things should start winding down by about noon in Nashua, Tuesday,” Schroeter said.

With this storm, there is no clean transition. Schroeter said usually storms bring snow, sleet and then rain. This time, however, there is cool air to the north pushing against this storm, causing the precipitation types to alternate. Schroeter described it as a battle between two air masses.

While southern New Hampshire is expected to miss out on the significant snow totals, the White Mountains could receive more than a foot of snow.

“We’re looking at two to four inches for southern New Hampshire and 12 to 18 in the White Mountains – probably more like 12 to 15,” Schroeter said.
