Produce delivered to those in need
NASHUA – Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter officials started a new initiative Friday by sending the mobile food pantry to deliver fresh produce to those who may otherwise not have access to it.
On Friday, staff members took fresh fruit and vegetables to people where they live, rather than requiring the kitchen at 2 Quincy St. The two Friday stops for the mobile food pantry were the Bronstein Apartments and Davidson Landing.
From 3-5 p.m. on Fridays for the remainder of the summer, NSKS staff members will deliver food to those who need it most. Additionally, there will be another site throughout the summer offering fresh produce once a week at Dr. Norman W. Crisp Elementary School.
Shelter Executive Director Michael Reinke said this is a new program for his organization.
“The idea is really to provide food access to people who have mobility issues,” Reinke said.
This can include those bound by a wheelchair, or those without reliable transportation. Food will arrive where they live once a week henceforth.
Reinke said a $4,000 grant will cover the cost of transportation and staffing for this new initiative. He hopes people will be interested in volunteering for the weekly event.
Nonetheless, participants are encouraged to bring reusable bags with them to carry their food home with them.
