Reeds Ferry celebrates 50 years of service

By Staff | Jun 2, 2019

MERRIMACK – In celebration of its 50th anniversary as a part of the Merrimack School District, Reeds Ferry Elementary School hosted a community carnival on Saturday, with games, face painting and a special ceremony dedicating a new brick walkway leading to the school’s flag.

“Caring, community, educational, friendly, fun, helpful, kind, learning, proud, respect, respectful and welcoming,” said former principal Marge Chiafery, who is now the school district’s superintendent. “These words describe the way of being at Reeds Ferry Elementary School in the past, the present and I have no doubt, the future.”

Even with all the fun and games, which included not only balloon animals, a dunk tank, a rock band featuring high school students and many other activities, those attending still made time to gather at the flag pole at 4 p.m. to honor the school’s place in the community.

With help from local companies and those who bought bricks as a part of the fundraiser, the school was able to put the carnival together free of charge, officials said.

“So, the bricks served as a fundraiser to have this event so it could be free to all families,” said the school’s principal, Kimberly Yarlott, who has been part of the administration since 2005.

The bricks were donated by G.I. Stone, a Milford stone supply and fabrication company. They were laid by Dan Edmonds of Edmonds Landscaping, a former student at Reeds Ferry, something Yarlott said was only a microcosm of the example that proves how special and integrated into the community the school is.

“You can see that there are so many people here from long, long ago, from back when the school started and opened,” Yarlott said. “We have former students and current students, so I think the fact that it’s a community school and really commemorative of what Merrimack is as a school that really appreciates and celebrates families.”
