Nashua students will learn about city government

By Mathew Plamondon - Staff Writer | May 17, 2019

NASHUA – Mayor Jim Donchess welcomed 19 high school students who will soon be seniors in the Nashua School District to City Hall on Thursday for summer internship orientation.

During their internships, set to run from July 8 to Aug. 13, each student will be paid to work 20 hours per work. They will be able to learn how departments and employees function, while participating in daily tasks within their designated job descriptions.

“It’s great for the city because we get some extra help for the summertime and we get to meet a group of 19 from all over Nashua,” Donchess said addressing the interns. “I think it’s good for the students because they get work experience because they learn a subject area like engineering, economic development.”

The 19 students participating are Tanisha Asarpota, Abigail Bender, Spoorthi Chetan, Gemma Djossou, Theresa Ellison, Satwik Gaddam, Mohamad Ayyas Mustafa Kamal, Victoria Kennedy, Grace Lehto, Rebeca Lins, Colin McMahon, Riley Olsen, Alexandra Pickett, Ariana Tomala Pintado, Jamila-Ashanti Scales, Yamileshka Sanchez Gomez, Grace Wang, Ann Wangu and Timothy Yang.

As a part of My Brother’s Keeper initiative, a program introduced by President Barak Obama in 2013 that aims to give every child an opportunity to succeed, no matter who they are, where they come from or the circumstances into which they are born, the students selected will receive the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on and life experience, while working within city departments.

“There’s a great variety of young people that we have,” Donchess said about the collection of students. “Hopefully, for those who are in families that have less advantageous economic circumstances, it will help them financially.”

The students were selected after submitting applications and taking part in group interviews with city officials. They will work with the Division of Public Works, the Mayor’s Office, the Risk Management Department, and in other areas.
