Hassan to speak at global forum

By Staff | May 17, 2019

MANCHESTER – An outspoken critic of the U.S.’s current cyber capabilities, Hassan has been working to bring the attention of the American people to, what she calls, the failings of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Through her work on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Hassan has worked diligently to increase the U.S.’ preparedness for the next cyber attack.

She will join the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire at their Global Forum to be held at Southern New Hampshire University at 6 p.m. May 19. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Hassan will provide some opening remarks about cyber warfare as a way to open the discussion to this important topic, leading into a presentation by New York Times National Security Correspondent, David Sanger. The evening event will be focused on the various threats and attacks that go on every day throughout the world, many of which lay dormant for months and even years.

“The fact that Russian agents were able to hack into multiple organizations that provide power generation here in the U.S. should make us all stop and think,” council Executive Director Tim Horgan said. “We are so glad to have a strong advocate for cyber-security in Senator Hassan and are honored that she will take the time to share her thoughts with our audience.”

Through her work on getting DHS Cyber Hunt and Incident Response Teams Act bill passed, Hassan has taken the lead in this field.

“The United States must do far more to confront cyber-threats from countries like Russia and China. The digital age has transformed the nature of warfare and we need to not only strengthen our own cyber capabilities, but also to develop a cyber-doctrine to govern the rules of engagement,” Hassan said.
