Hassan’s Hire Veteran Health Heroes Act passes House, headed to president’s desk
WASHINGTON – This week, the House of Representatives passed the Hire Veteran Health Heroes Act of 2021, a bipartisan bill first introduced by U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Mike Braun (R-IN). This legislation directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to create a program to recruit military medical personnel who have less than one year left in their service to work in federal health care occupations in departments like Veterans Affairs.
Additionally, the House passed the Colonel John M. McHugh Tuition Fairness for Survivors Act, legislation cosponsored by Senator Hassan to expand in-state tuition eligibility for the families of veterans who die from service-connected disabilities.
Both bipartisan bills are now headed to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
“Veterans and their families have made immense sacrifices to keep our country safe, secure, and free, and we must always work to ensure that they have the support that they need and have earned,” said Senator Hassan. “There is no room for partisanship when it comes to our veterans, and these bipartisan bills will expand veterans’ employment opportunities, as well as support family members who heartbreakingly lose their loved one as a result of their service. These bills will make a real difference for veterans and their families, and I look forward to them being signed into law.”
Hassan is working across the aisle to help ensure that veterans, service members, and their families have the support that they need to thrive. The Senator recently introduced bipartisan legislation with Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) help reduce the disparity in out-of-pocket costs for military uniforms for women service members, who often pay more for uniform items than their male counterparts. Furthermore, Senators Hassan and Marco Rubio (R-FL) led successful bipartisan efforts to push the Department of Education to ensure that more service members can utilize the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Additionally, President Biden recently signed into law a bipartisan bill cosponsored by Senator Hassan to automatically provide cost-of-living increases to Veterans Affairs benefits for certain veterans with disabilities and dependent survivors.
