Shaheen announces Plaistow’s Methuen Construction awarded federal contract at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to complete dry dock project

By Staff | Sep 3, 2021

MANCHESTER – U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services and Appropriations Committees, announced today that Plaistow’s Methuen Construction has been awarded a federal contract at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) to complete the Dry Dock 2 complex. Shaheen has historically secured authorization and federal funding for the multi-mission dry dock project. In the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs funding bill for fiscal year (FY) 2022, Shaheen again secured these investments, which includes $475 million in funding for the multi-mission dry dock project.

“New Hampshire’s role in support of our national defense is undeniable, from the ongoing work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to maintain our submarines to the Granite State businesses that help make this work possible. I’m proud of all our state has to offer to bolster our military readiness,” said Shaheen. “I want to congratulate Methuen Construction for securing this contract and I look forward to seeing their work get underway. As a senior member of the Senate Armed Services and Appropriations Committees, I’ll continue to advocate for priorities that support our state’s contributions to our national defense, which both strengthen our national security and invest in our local economy.”

“Methuen Construction is proud and honored to continue its decade-long presence at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with another mission critical project that facilitates the readiness of the Navy fleet,” said Joe Barbone, President, Methuen Construction.

In addition to her leadership through the Senate Armed Services Committee on annual defense legislation, Shaheen also prioritizes legislation in the Senate in support of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. This includes the Supplying Help to Infrastructure in Ports, Yards, and America’s Repair Docks (SHIPYARD) Act of 2021, which she introduced earlier this year with Senator Wicker (R-MS), and would provide $25 billion to make investments needed to optimize, improve and rebuild shipyard facilities, electrical infrastructure, environmental systems, and the equipment of public and private shipyards in the U.S. that support the U.S. Navy fleet. Shaheen and Wicker are co-chairs of the Senate Navy Caucus.
