WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement after voting in favor of Linda Thomas-Greenfield to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Thomas-Greenfield’s confirmation cleared the Senate by a vote of 78 to 21.

“As our nation confronts the greatest international health crisis of our generation alongside critical, long-term global threats such as human rights, rule of law and climate change, collaboration and coordination with U.S. allies has never been more pressing. A seasoned diplomat with over 30 years of experience – from working on global economic development to humanitarian issues in developing nations – Linda Thomas-Greenfield brings the knowledge and experience needed to represent the U.S. as its ambassador to the United Nations,” said Shaheen. “Our national security demands that we promote global stability, which is why Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield’s role as U.S. representative to the UN will be critical. I’m particularly eager to support her efforts around protecting global access to reproductive health care and holding the Kremlin accountable for its malign behavior. I’m confident Linda Thomas-Greenfield will serve our country with distinction and honor, and I look forward to partnering with her as we rebuild our relationships with allies and restore our leadership on key international initiatives.”
