Insurance department: More than $2.6M in benefits found

By Staff | Sep 20, 2020

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire Insurance Department says more than $2.6 million in life unclaimed insurance benefits has been found for residents since 2016.

The department said each year, millions of dollars in life insurance benefits go unclaimed by beneficiaries who can’t find their loved ones’ policies, or don’t know the policies exist.

A life insurance policy locator service is used by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to help track down polices or annuity contracts of late family members or friends.

Since 2016, there have been 758 search requests in New Hampshire and 283 policies have been matched.

To request a policy locator search, consumers can complete the association’s online Life Insurance Policy Locator Service request form. Once the request is complete, the NAIC will send the policyholder’s information to all licensed life insurance companies. The companies will check their records to determine if they have a policy matching the beneficiary’s information.

Consumers would need to provide documentation to the insurance company to receive the benefit.
