By Staff | Sep 18, 2021

LYNDEBOROUGH – On Sunday, Sept. 26, 2 p.m., Bill McAuley, head of the Francestown Heritage Museum, will present a talk on the Second N.H. Turnpike in the Town Hall in Lyndeborough Center.

His talk will focus on the few miles of the former toll road in North Lyndeborough.

The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The Second N.H. Turnpike was incorporated in 1799 and built in 1802. It ran from Amherst to Winsor, Vt., and operated with a daily stage for about 50 years.

The Mont Vernon history notes: “it was, at times, filled with teams of the farmers . . . carrying their produce to Boston and returning, to the country homes and stores, groceries, liquors, dry goods, etc., demanded for home use.”

The turnpike required stopping places and one of those, The Parker Tavern Stand, was in North Lyndeborough. It opened with the Turnpike and operated for many years.
