NASHUA – Girl Scout Junior Evelyn Bouchard, 9, of Nashua won Best Overall in a tire-changing contest run by Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains.

Her sister, Girl Scout Daisy Isabelle, 6, was awarded Budding Pit Crew Member. The Girl Scouts were presented a bedazzled adjustable wrench and certificates to mark their achievements. The girls got expert help from their grandfather, Richard Lavoie, who used to teach automotive maintenance.

Along with the Nashua sisters were two other awardees. Jaslyn Coldwell of Goffstown, a Girl Scout Senior, was named Independent Pit Crew Member for changing the tire mostly on her own and persevering despite the difficulties of the work – including keeping track of all the lug nuts. Aria Breen-Welsh of Deerfield, a Girl Scout Brownie, was awarded the Super Speedy honor, when she assisted her father in changing her tire in a record-breaking time of just over six minutes.

The contest was held over the summer, asking contestants to remove and reinstall a tire on a vehicle, and submit a video of the girl doing the work. Having a responsible adult oversee the tire change was required. Videos were judged by their speed, accuracy, girl involvement, and safety of the car once the change was complete.

The contest was created to promote the automotive engineering badges Girl Scouts released this summer. These badges teach how vehicles are designed, engineered, and manufactured, and the contest taught girls a valuable life skill everyone who drives should know.

Helping girls learn vital life skills is key to the Girl Scouting program. Girl Scouts become young women of courage, confidence, and character as they progress through the program, which focuses on STEM, entrepreneurship, outdoor skills, and general life skills. At Girl Scouts, your girl will prepare for a lifetime of leadership, success, and adventure in a safe, no-limits place designed for and by girls. See more at www.girlscoutsgwm.org.
