On Sept. 8, the Altrusa Club of Merrimack Valley kicked off the start of a new year of service in the community by celebrating World Literacy Day with the distribution of a $500 scholarship to Kylie Letendre, a student enrolled in the BA in Elementary Education and Special Education at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

The scholarship was given in memory of Eleanor “Ellie” Durant, 38 year member of Altrusa, who taught for more than 40 years in the Chelmsford School System.

In addition, Altrusa recognized Alexia Rivers, also a student in the BA in Elementary Education and Special Education at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, with the Altrusa Academic Award ($250.00).
