Nashua Garden Club to hold plant sale on May 18

By Staff | May 16, 2013

NASHUA – Colorful perennials and annuals will brighten the day at the Nashua Garden Club’s annual plant sale from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 18, at the Nashua Historical Society, 5 Abbott St.

An enormous selection of perennials in pots from 4 inches to 1 gallon will be priced from $2 and up. Most plants have been nurtured from club member’s gardens and include everything from flowers, herbs and vegetables, ground covers and hostas to shrubs and even some trees. They are zone appropriate, hardened off, and will be arranged in “sun” and “shade” sections for easy selection.

The family of the late Malcolm “Mike” Lowe, co-founder of the New Hampshire Rose Society, donated some of his rose bushes to the sale. Lowe, who died in 2009, was an accomplished and gifted rosarian.

A highlight of the sale will be a raffle table with themed gift baskets, and there will be homemade baked goods for sale.

The plant sale will be held rain or shine. The nonprofit club uses the proceeds to promote horticulture and beautification projects and to support charitable and club activities.

The Nashua Historical Society will have its own activities. The Speare Museum will be open for tours, and copies of the book “Nashua People and Places” will be available for purchase.

Be sure to check out the black walnut tree adjacent to the society’s parking lot. It is Hillsborough County’s largest specimen, as well as the second largest in the state. It recently received a “Big Tree” award from the state.
