Greater Nashua Flashback

By Telegraph file photo - | Mar 26, 2022

(From The Telegraph files) A note on this photo says it was taken in September 1964, but that estimate may be off a decade or so, given the model years of the cars that happened to be parked in the background while a photographer, probably perched atop a fire engine, did this photo shoot of the men assigned to the old Central Fire Station. If it really was taken in 1964, maybe it happened to be drive-your-oldest-car-to-work day, as the front end of the car at far left appears to be an early 1950s Oldsmobile, while the white car in front of it is clearly no newer than a 1950 model. And the two dark cars at right are almost certainly in the range of the early- to mid-1950s. Many old time Nashuans will recall the single-story brick building in the background as the A&P grocery store, one of many precursors to today's supermarkets. When the A&P moved out, sometime in the 1960s, Cheddie's Donut shop opened at the location, followed by a bakery called Donut Snacks of New England. Tragically, fire consumed the building in December 1973, claiming the lives of two men working the overnight shift.
