Two charged in beating, robbery

By Staff | Jun 7, 2016

NASHUA – A Massachusetts man is in jail following his Monday arraignment on multiple charges stemming from the alleged tire iron beating of a Nashua man last week, police said.

A Nashua district court judge set bail at $25,000 cash-only for James Robinson, 25, of 217 Salem Road in Billerica, Mass., at Robinson’s video-conference arraignment from Valley Street jail.

Robinson is charged with one count each of robbery, first-degree assault, and criminal threatening, all Class A felonies, and one count of criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor, according to police.

He is due back in court on Thursday, June 16, for a probable cause hearing.

Also charged in the incident was Theresa Rodonis, 41, of 241/2 Jefferson St., Nashua, who faces one count of robbery, a Class B felony, police said.

She was also arraigned Monday via video conference from jail, where she was held on $7,500 bail.

The incident that led to their arrests began with a verbal argument between Rodonis and the victim, a 39-year-old man. Police said the dispute broke out around 7 p.m. on June 1 at 55 Crown St., in Nashua.

The victim, who lives in one of several camping trailers parked at 55 Crown St., told police that Rodonis showed up with four other people and began removing items from another trailer.

He said he warned Rodonis that she wasn’t allowed on the property, according to a police affidavit, and the argument ensued.

The victim told police he was then struck on the back of his head by what he believed was a crow bar, but turned out to be a tire iron.

Police said the victim recognized his alleged attacker as a man named "James" and that James was holding the tire iron in one hand and a knife in the other.

The alleged assailant, later identified as Robinson, told the victim "I will kill you" several times, police reported.

Robinson at one point dropped the tire iron, picked up a "long, metal square-shaped pole" and allegedly swung it at the victim, striking him in his back and an arm, police added.

The victim told Robinson and Rodonis that he was recording the incident with his cellphone, which, police said, prompted them to try and take it from him.

He was eventually able to put the phone in his camper, at which time he told police he retrieved a knife and told Robinson that "he would defend himself if Robinson continued to attack him," according to police reports.

Upon arrival, police found the victim bleeding from the back of his head and his mouth, and had swelling on his back and multiple contusions to his arm.

He was taken to a local hospital, where police interviewed him, according to their reports. His account of the events matched the video he recorded with his phone, which, police said, was taken as evidence.
