Music of Bach, Reger, & Debussy

Matt Dickey and Bozena O’Brien, violin, and Kathryn Southworth, piano

Music School faculty members Matt Dickey, violin, and Kathryn Southworth, piano, will present a program built around two masterpieces of the violin and piano repertoire: J.S. Bach’s b minor Sonata and Claude Debussy’s Sonata #3. Joining Matt to perform Max Reger’s Violin Duos is violinist and Music School String Department Chair Bozena O’Brien. Retiring this year after 35 years at the Music School, Bozena is excited that Matt will succeed her as String Department Chair, so this concert will be a wonderful picture of their collaborative spirit. Sweet Lovers Love the Spring: Songs of Finzi, Brahms & Hoagy Carmichael

Music School faculty members Jazimina MacNeil, mezzo-soprano, and Kathryn Southworth, piano, celebrate the season with a host of flowering springtime songs. The concert title, “Sweet Lovers Love the Spring,” is drawn from Gerald Finzi’s song cycle “Let Us Garlands Bring,” with texts by Shakespeare, which is the centerpiece of the concert. Springtime has certainly inspired composers from Brahms to Hoagy Carmichael, so audiences can expect a bouquet of beautiful and varied songs, livestreamed from the Music School’s Recital Hall. About the Artists

Matthew Dickey earned a Master of Music from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2015 studying with Piotr Milewski. He has performed widely in the Midwest with orchestras such as The Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic, and the Queen City Opera Company; he was also on the faculty at the Toedtman School of Music and the Northern Kentucky School of Music. Mr. Dickey has also served as Concert Master of the Booth-Tarkington Theater in Indianapolis and as Assistant Concertmaster on tour with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players.

Jazimina MacNeil, mezzo soprano, received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and Master of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music. Called “clearly a singer to watch” by the New York Times, her recent performances include concerts with the Apple Hill string quartet, a solo recital with the Sideman Projekt in Berlin, a Verdi Requiem with the Brattleboro Concert Choir, a Mozart Requiem with the Albany Symphony, and the Winners Recital of the Liederkranz Competition in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. Since moving to New Hampshire, she has become active with a number of Monadnock area musical organizations and will be performing with the Boston Lyric Opera in April 2019. Jazimina’s enthusiastic, joyful teaching style is influenced by her study of the Alexander Technique and yoga, with a focus on freeing the body and breath to free the voice. She is endlessly thrilled by the process of discovery, and no matter what kind of day her students are having, she wants them to leave their lesson feeling lighter, more energized, and inspired by their own capabilities. 

Bozena O’Brien, originally from Poland, received her training at Tanglewood, Boston University, and with Marylou Speaker Churchill of the Boston Symphony. She holds a Suzuki Book 1 Certificate, and has taught at St. Paul’s School, Plymouth State University, Holderness School and Kimball Union Academy. She performs with the NH Music Festival, Vermont Symphony, Handel Society of Dartmouth and many other choral and orchestral ensembles as an active freelance violinist throughout New England.

Kathryn Southworth holds a B.M. in Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and an M.M. in Vocal Accompanying and Coaching from the University of Illinois. She held a graduate assistantship as staff accompanist under the tutelage of acclaimed accompanist John Wustman and served as a musical ambassador to Costa Rica with soprano Ollie Watts Davis. She has been a collaborative pianist for Opera North, Dartmouth College, Plymouth State University, and Boston Ballet, and has also served as music director, accompanist, and organist for many theater and choral groups in New England. Kathy is currently music director and organist for the Canterbury United Community Church. Former faculty positions include St. Paul’s School and Plymouth State University.
