VA medical center chosen for new safety designation
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire’s only VA medical center has been chosen as part of a new initiative to put procedures and protocols in place to maximize safety and minimize harm.
The Manchester Medical Center is the first in the Veterans Health Administration’s system to become a High Reliability Organization.
The term identifies leadership commitment, employee engagement, creating a culture of safety and continuous improvement as critical. It also empowers veterans and their family caregivers, along with employees who work hands-on with veterans, to make decisions and impact improvements.
In 2017, top officials from the medical center were removed after the Boston Globe reported whistleblower complaints about substandard treatment and unsafe conditions. A task force made 29 recommendations including expanding mental health programs and services for women and older veterans.
