Strong storms roll through New England; heat to follow
MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) — Powerful storms are rolling through New England, causing power outages and street flooding.
The National Weather Service has posted a flash flood watch for much of the region and a flood advisory is in effect for parts of eastern Massachusetts, including Boston and much of Rhode Island.
Forecasters are expecting minor flooding in poor drainage areas.
The heavy downpours reached Boston by midmorning after an earlier round of thunderstorms in Connecticut left more than an inch of rain in some communities and knocked out power to several thousand utility customers.
Behind the storms is a possible heat wave. Temperatures could top 90 degrees in much of the region beginning Saturday and for several days to follow.
